Custom Lampshade Process

Making a custom lampshade with Cranberry Hill Lighting is a team effort. We will make sure your new shade fits your lamp and improves your home. Here’s how we help your idea come to life:

Step 1: Consultation

A consultation is the first step in the process. There’s no need for an appointment unless you need us on location. When you visit the shop for a consultation or fitting bring your lamp! We will discuss your needs and the details about your custom lampshade project. Our discussion will cover the room’s style, color palette, and the location of the lamp or the pendant lampshade within the room. Lastly, we’ll talk about the amount of light that’s needed from the lampshade; task, reading or ambient. This helps us understand the your style, your lighting needs, and the feel you are looking for.

Step 2: Determine Size and Shape

After the consultation we’ll decide the best size and shape for your lampshade. Having your lamp with you helps us insure that the size and shape we choose is the correct proportion.

Step 3: Choose Materials & Color

Our Swatches

Choose from our extensive swatch collection of fine silks, Linens and Specialty Papers.

Your Fabric or Wallpaper

Bring us your fabric and wallpaper swatches. This will help us choose the color of fabric or paper from our swatches —OR— we can use your fabric or wallpaper to make the lampshade. We’ll spec out the amount of yardage needed for you to order.

Hand Painted Match

Bring us fabric or wallpaper samples large enough to show the full pattern and color. We’ll create a design for your approval and then hand paint a custom lampshade.

Step 4: Handcrafted Creation

Our skilled artisans will make your custom lampshade, paying close attention to every detail and ensuring a beautiful final product.

Step 5: Pick-Up or Delivery

Your beautiful handmade lampshade takes time. Once completed, you can choose to either pick it up at the shop or have it shipped directly to your home.

Fitter Options: A Perfect Fit for Every Shade

The correct fitter ensures your lampshade sits correctly on the lamp. We use several fitter styles which are determined by the lamp hardware and socket types.

Washer: This is the most common fitter. It’s used when your lamp has a harp & saddle.

Edison Clip: This clip type clips directly onto traditional Edison shaped bulbs, LED or incandescent, when the lamp doesn’t have a harp & saddle.

Candle or Torpedo Clip: This clip is often used for chandelier shades and smaller lamps. It clips directly onto torpedo shaped bulbs.

Uno Slip: This fitter is the same sized ring as the threaded UNO without the threading. Like the name says, it “slips” over the socket jacket.

Uno Threaded: This fitter is a ring that screws onto a threaded socket jacket. It is usually used for downward task lighting and is commonly found on antique bridge floor lamps.

Nord: This is a unique fitter used with phenolic sockets. It is a common fitter used on lampshades made overseas.
